Egyptian Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouli has urged the parliament to approve President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi’s decision to extend the "state of emergency" imposed in all governorates for three months over serious security and health conditions in the country. Madbouli addressed lawmakers on Sunday, saying: “All of you are aware of the magnitude of the threats and turmoil that still afflict the Arab region, the Middle East, and the entire world. Amid these [circumstances], we are faced by those who plan to destabilize the state.” The PM spoke after a terrorist attack rocked North Sinai last week. In his speech, he also tackled the coronavirus pandemic and its impact on Egypt. He stressed that the Egyptian government is facing the health crisis through measures developed according to the medical and preventive standards set by the World Health Organization (WHO). He indicated that the government was able to ensure financial support to all citizens affected by the pandemic, as well as factories that had to reduce or halt production. “We hope that all citizens adhere to the procedures set by the Ministry of Health, in order to preserve their lives and the lives of their families and maintain the safety of all the people of the homeland,” stressed the prime minister. Meanwhile, the Egyptian President and the Prime Minister met Sunday to review the executive status of a number of national projects in light of the implications of the COVID-19 disease. They also discussed the developments of the government’s plan to transfer ministries and various state institutions to the new administrative capital. Sisi called for continuous work and periodic follow-up of various construction works and projects in the new administrative capital, while ensuring the site upholds the highest levels of safety and health care requirements to maintain personnel’s safety.
