Apple has launched an updated version of its popular 13in MacBook Pro laptop with a revamped keyboard, more storage and faster chips. The 13in MacBook Pro now has Apple’s Magic Keyboard, replacing the ultra-thin Butterfly keyboard that suffered from multiple issues regarding noise, dust and malfunctioning keys. The new machine joins the larger 16in MacBook Pro and the recently released MacBook Air, completing the removal of the Butterfly keyboard from Apple’s product line. The new keyboard has 1mm greater of key travel with a redesigned scissor mechanism, which has proven popular in Apple’s other machines. The keyboard also has new separate escape key and inverted T-shape arrow keys, two features requested by Apple’s most ardent users, alongside the Touch Bar and a separate Touch ID fingerprint scanner. The new laptop also receives optional new chips in the form of Intel’s latest 10-generation Core processors, which have up to 80% faster graphics, matching machines from rivals including Microsoft’s Surface Laptop 3. Apple has also doubled the minimum storage space offered. The updated laptop continues Apple’s shift away from absolute thinness and towards user-friendly features, such as longer battery life, thicker keyboards and easier repairs, first shown in the 16in MacBook Pro released last year. The laptop is also made from recycled tin and plastic, and put together using renewable energy. The 13in MacBook Pro starts at £1,299 and ships on 7 May in the UK. Apple reported $58.3bn (£47bn) in sales for the last quarter in recent earnings, an increase year-on-year and above analysts estimates, despite the impact of coronavirus creating supply constraints in February and suppressed consumer demand. But the company’s recent lower-key releases, including laptops, iPads and a new, cheaper iPhone SE, which is expected to be extremely popular, have helped alongside an uptick in services revenue, including streaming TV.
