RIYADH — The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has warned the public against using a hand sanitizer gel bearing the brand name “Nex” produced by Sarin Detergents Factory, due to a lower content than required of two alcohols, which are the sterilizing agents in the product, Saudi Press Agency (SPA) said Saturday. The SFDA said that it analyzed several samples of hand sanitizers being circulated in the local markets to verify their safety and whether they are in conformity with the required standards and specifications. The analysis results showed that the product “Nex” contained a lower content of two sterilizing alcohols — ethanol and isopropanol (isopropyl alcohol) — leading to the product performing poorly in sanitizing the hands. The SFDA called on consumers not to use the product and if they had already bought one, they should return it to the shop or pharmacy where they purchased it to get a refund. If the salesman or store does not respond to the request for reimbursement, the consumer should dial the Ministry of Commerce Call Center at 1900. The authority asserted that it is taking measures in coordination with the pertinent authorities to recall the product from the shelves, prevent its circulation in the market and take legal measures against violators.
