While Saudi Arabia is focusing efforts to end the escalating conflict between the Yemeni government and the Southern Transitional Council (STC), Yemeni politicians reaffirmed to Asharq Al-Awsat that the implementation of the Riyadh Agreement remains the best option to end the dispute and unify efforts against the Houthi coup. “The Riyadh agreement is still the optimal way out, as it approached the crisis in a realistic and systematic way and offered solutions that restore matters to their proper place,” Yemeni Information Ministry Deputy Abdulbaset Al-Qaidi said. Al-Qaidi asserted that Saudi Arabia weighing in as a guarantor is one of the main reasons that grants the Riyadh Agreement efficiency, making it the most viable and least costing solution. Speaking to Asharq Al-Awsat, Al-Qaidi confirmed that the real threat facing Yemen today is the Houthi coup. “We only have the option of turning a new page over disputes, because no matter how big those disputes are they aren’t as dangerous as the Houthi threat which poses an existential threat to state institutions and Yemen as a whole,” Al-Qaidi said. Yemeni researcher and academic Fares al-Beil also said that the Riyadh Agreement is the most comprehensive and concise arrangement reached for Yemen by far. Al-Beil believes that the Riyadh Agreement is the sole solution for the STC and government dispute. The agreement, according to al-Beil, presents a swift and complete solution for the warring parties who share a common enemy, the Houthi. It also prepares the STC and the government to confront and emerge victorious against Houthi militias, while offering the foundations to resolve Yemeni quarrels in the future. Al-Beil called on all Yemeni parties to sense their historic responsibility towards the war-torn country and its disparaged people so that efforts spent by Saudi Arabia and Arab Coalition aren’t wasted.
