Three-time Iraqi lawmaker Ghida Kambash dies of coronavirus

BAGHDAD — Iraqi parliament on Friday announced the death of a lawmaker from the coronavirus, marking the first known virus-related fatality among the country’s top political community. Ghida Kambash, the 46-year-old lawmaker, died two weeks after the detection of her infection, leaving behind four children. Kambash was a three-time lawmaker from Baquba, northeast of Baghdad, was currently serving as the head of the parliamentary committee for higher education. She helped pass laws on education reform and social welfare. Meanwhile, the Iraqi Health Ministry on Friday recorded 2,848 new coronavirus cases, the highest daily increase since the outbreak of the disease, bringing the total number of confirmed COVID-19 infections in the country to 72,460. The ministry also confirmed 78 more deaths, raising the total number of virus-related fatalities in the country to 2,960. A total of 1,878 people recovered over the past 24 hours, taking the total number of recoveries from the disease to 41,380, the ministry added. The new cases were recorded after 12,054 testing kits were used across the country during the past 24 hours, and a total of 661,090 tests have so far been conducted since the outbreak of the disease, according to the ministry"s statement. — Agencies
