TOKYO — The powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un said Friday another summit with the US is “unnecessary and useless” to the North unless Washington changes its approach to Pyongyang. “I doubt that things like the DPRK-US summit talks would happen this year,” Kim Yo-jong said in a statement carried by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). “Serious contradiction and insolvable discord exist between the DPRK and the US. Under such circumstances, I am of the view the DPRK-US summit talks are not needed this year and beyond, and for our part, it is not beneficial to us unless the US shows decisive change in its stand,” she said. DPRK is the acronym of North Korea’s official name — Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. But Kim Yo-jong said she cannot expect what will happen as it depends on decisions and determinations by Kim and Trump, adding that the two leaders have “close relations.” Her statement came after US president Donald Trump said earlier this week that he would meet the North Korea’s leader again if he thinks it is going to be helpful. Kim Yo-jong also insisted that the North’s denuclearization would be only realized if the US takes major, irreversible measures. “We would like to make it clear that it does not necessarily mean the denuclearization is not possible. But what we mean is that it is not possible at this point of time,” she stressed. Kim and Trump met three times since June 2018 and agreed that Washington would provide security guarantees to North Korea in return for complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. However, the denuclearization talks have since stalled following their no-deal summit in February last year in Hanoi. — KUNA
