Saudi doctor bags top honor for pioneering work in human genetics

RIYADH — The American Society of Human Genetics has announced the granting of 2020 Curt Stern Award to Dr. Fowzan Alkuraya. Dr. Alkuraya is a professor of human genetics and senior consultant and principal clinical scientist at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center in Riyadh. Curt Stern Award is granted yearly for remarkable scientific achievements in human genetics that have taken place during the last 10 years. The awarding of Dr. Fowzan Alkuraya came in recognition of his significant contributions to human genetics and the importance of his discoveries in promoting the concept of the close relationship between genetics and human health, along with his record of research and academic production that exceeded 420 scientific papers. During the past years, Dr. Fowzan Alkuraya won several awards, including the King Salman Award for Disability Research in 2014 and William K. Bowes Jr. Award in Medical Genetics in 2010 from Harvard Medical School in Boston, and became the first winner, who is not from the United States of America, to obtain this award.
