RIYADH — The King Abdul Aziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity (Mawhiba) and the Ministry of Education have prepared Saudi Arabia"s team to take part in the International Chemistry Olympiads 2020, which will be held virtually in Turkey from July 23 to July 29. After clearing the winter forum, intensive training, and a number of tests, the top four students — Abdulaziz Al-Jaeed, Iyad Al-Salhi, Osama Al-Ali and Muhammad Al-Hadithi — have been nominated to represent the Kingdom in the competition. Saudi Arabia has won 26 awards during its Olympics participation, including 7 silver medals, 17 bronze medals, and a certificate of appreciation. This participation is the tenth participation of the Kingdom in the International Olympiad of Chemistry, where the participation of the Saudi team began in 2011, and Saudi Arabia was ranked 61 out of 70 countries. In 2018, Saudi Arabia ranked 28 out of 78 countries, advancing 33 places compared to its first participation in 2011. The Olympiad is an annual international competition in chemistry for high school students and held at the end of the school year. The competition began in Czechoslovakia in 1968 where the Olympics were part of the secondary education system in all states of the erstwhile Soviet Union until it was decided that different countries should host the competition annually, and only 3 countries participated in the first version, namely Czechoslovakia, Poland and Hungary.
