BEIRUT — Two huge explosions rocked the Lebanese capital, Beirut, on Tuesday, pushing the country on the edge as it already reels from the economic crisis exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic. According to local media reports, a warehouse at the Beirut Port caught fire, leading to blasts, which reverberated in the capital and the suburbs. The blasts caused extensive damages to the surrounding buildings and wounded scores of people. According to the reports, Nazar Najarian, the secretary-general of Lebanon"s Kataeb Party, succumbed to the injuries he sustained, marking the first high-profile casualty as a result of the blasts. Lebanese Health Minister Hamad Hasan said there was a "very high number of injuries," according to local television channel LBC. Beirut"s governor told local TV "I have never in my life seen a disaster this big." There are reports of many casualties as hospitals are overwhelmed with the injured people. Several eyewitnesses reported that some of the wounded may be buried under rubble. Exact numbers of casualties were not yet confirmed. Miles from the port, balconies were knocked down, windows shattered, streets were covered with glass and bricks and lined with wrecked cars. The explosions took place ahead of the verdict in a trial for the killing of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri in 2005.
