She wins 6-3, 6-4 after 80 minutes, booking a US Open semi-final showdown with Jennifer Brady on Thursday. Second set: *Osaka 6-3, 5-4 Rogers Osaka pushes it to 30-all on Rogers’ serve and she’s two points from the finish line. But Rogers follows with a backhand winner into the open court followed by a blistering 107mph service winner out wide. Rogers holds and will force Osaka to serve it out. Second set: Osaka 6-3, 5-3 Rogers* Another love hold for dialed-in Osaka, who’s won 14 of the last 15 points on her serve. Rogers will serve to stay in the tournament. Second set: *Osaka 6-3, 2-1 Rogers Rogers gets the best of Osaka with an inside-out forehand winner from a step inside the baseline to settle a 19-shot rally, the longest of the match so far. But after pounding a backhand winner down the line for 30-love, Rogers follows with her 19th, 20th and 21st unforced errors (all off forehands) to go break point down. Osaka wastes it with a mishit backhand, but she earns a second break chance moments later and converts it with a sharply angled backhand that Rogers can’t handle. Rogers with three times as many unforced errors (21) as Osaka (seven) and they’re starting to cost her. Second set: Osaka 6-3, 1-1 Rogers* Osaka goes down love-15 on her serve after first unforced backhand error of the night and gets pushed to 30-all as her service toss continues to betray her. But she follows with a pair of second serves that Rogers can’t return into play, closing out another hold. Both players struck 13 winners in the 38-minute opening set, but Osaka’s cleaner play (five unforced errors) has been the difference so far against the more erratic Rogers (16). She double-faults to open, misfires on a backhand and then watches helplessly as Osaka rips a backhand winner for triple break point. First set: Osaka 4-3 Rogers* More service toss wonkiness for Osaka and Rogers wins the first point of the game after pouncing on a second serve for a return winner. Osaka rattles off three quick points for 40-15, but Rogers responds with a return winner and Osaka mixes in her first double fault for deuce. Rogers then comes to net early in the point (aggressive!) and pounds an overhand winner to set up her first break-point opportunity of the night, but Osaka erases it with an ace ... or not! Rogers has challenged it and Hawk-Eye rules it out by inches. Now the American gets a second crack at her first break point and this time converts it with forehand return winner off a ripe 75mph second serve. Osaka breaks in sixth game of first set! First set: *Osaka 4-2 Rogers Rogers opens with a pair of winners, but follows with three straight unforced errors to go 30-40 and break point down. She saves it with a backhand winner early in the point, but gives Osaka a second look at a break a few points later with another overcooked forehand. This time Osaka coverts when Rogers sends a backhand well past the baseline. Rogers has already made nearly five times as many unforced errors (14) as Osaka (four) compared to eight winners for both. First set: Osaka 3-2 Rogers* Another love hold for Osaka, who’s won the last 11 points on her serve. First set: *Osaka 2-2 Rogers Early pressure for Rogers after back-to-back unforced errors off the backhand put her into a love-30 hole on her serve. But the Pennsylvania native serves her way out of trouble, winning three quick points including a 111mph ace. Another backhand error pushes it to deuce, but she holds from there with a service winner and her second ace (upheld after an Osaka challenge). Five unforced errors off the backhand already for Rogers compared to zero for Osaka, but they’re on serve in the opener. First set: Osaka 2-1 Rogers* Osaka breezes to a hold at love with a forehand passing winner early in the point followed by 107mph and 110mph aces down the middle and a 75mph second-serve service winner. First set: *Osaka 1-1 Rogers Rogers falls behind love-15 after Osaka takes control early in a rally and pounds a forehand winner. The American wins two quick points but Osaka pushes it to 30-all when Rogers pushes a backhand long. From there Rogers hits a pair of forehand winners to get on the board with the early hold. She’s having a bit of trouble with her service toss early, twice balking and apologizing across the net. Rogers helps out with an unforced error on the backhand side, then Osaka crushes a 111mph ace down the middle for the hold. Osaka has taken the court wearing a mask with the name of George Floyd, the black man killed by police in Minneapolis after an incident captured on video in which an officer knelt on his neck as he lay on the ground. Osaka is back in the last eight of a grand slam for the first time since winning her second major at the 2019 Australian Open. Rogers, who is back in form after returning from a 13-month hiatus last year due to knee surgery, is playing in only her second career major quarter-final after making her first at the 2016 French Open. The fourth-seeded Osaka is no doubt the favorite, but the two-time major champion in winless in three career meetings with Rogers and has yet to win a set off the American.
