ABU DHABI — The United Arab Emirates reported a jump in coronavirus cases with 883 new infections detected on Wednesday, health authorities announced on Twitter. The ministry of health also reported two new deaths from COVID-19, bringing the death toll to 393. The increase marks the highest single day rise in COVID-19 cases since May, and the fourth highest on record, following May 19, 20, and 21 at the peak of the first wave of the pandemic. More than 85,000 new COVID-19 tests have been carried out, the ministry added, taking the total to over 7.7 million till date. A total of 416 patients have recovered during the past 24 hours. At 0.5 percent, the country has one of the lowest death rates in the world. It also has among the highest recovery rates in the world at 90 percent. Dr. Omar Al-Hammadi, official spokesperson for the UAE government, said Tuesday: "The high rate of recovery is largely due to the modern and innovative treatment methods, the expansion of the scope of examinations, the availability of medical personnel and supplies, the increase in the capacity to receive cases, and the availability of a strategic stock of medicine." The ministry has once again urged the public to follow all preventive guidelines after it was revealed that a COVID-positive UAE resident, who failed to follow the due safety measures, spread the infection to three families. Despite showing symptoms of the virus, he did not self-isolate and spread it to his wife and 44 others. His callousness resulted in the death of one of his elderly relative. “The reckless behavior of such individuals is the reason for setbacks. Everyone is responsible. We should follow all precautionary measures and avoid gatherings that can put us and the community at risk," Dr. Al-Hammadi said. — Agencies
