JEDDAH — Authorities in the holy city of Makkah have named and shamed a Saudi businessman after he was convicted of dealing in substandard and fake tires and lubricants, local media reports said on Tuesday. The businessman was also fined SR50,000 and had his firm shut down for a month and his goods confiscated. Saudi laws provide for penalties of up to three years in prison, fines of up to one million riyals, or both, defamation of the offender in two local newspapers at the expense of the violator, deportation of the foreign offeding workers, and suspension of business. Recently, there have been several cases where businessmen have been fined, named and shamed under court orders. Action has also been initiated against many traders for indulging in comercial cover-up (tasattur). The ministry of commerce urged all citizens and residents across the Kingdom to report cases of tasattur through the ministry’s call center on the toll-free number 1900, at https://mci.gov.sa/C-app, or through the ministry’s website.
