Tunis Governor Chadli Bouallaq announced a night curfew starting Thursday in four states - Tunis, Ben Arous, Ariana and Manouba - to curb the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. Bouallaq told local radio that the decision was proposed during a meeting held by the disaster response committees which discussed the situation of the pandemic in the four states. The Health Ministry announced 2,312 new COVID-19 cases on October 4 and 5, with 43 deaths. The authorities conducted 6,188 tests, 37.4 percent of which tested positive for the infection. The number of hospitalized patients reached about 452, including 124 in intensive care units, 54 of whom being on respirators. The director-general of health in Tunisia Faical Bensalah announced that the situation is critical and requires public vigilance. Meanwhile, the General Labor Union (UGTT) called on all Tunisian teachers to suspend classes on Friday in protest at the Ministry of Education’s failure to ensure a process that maintains the right to education as well as the right to healthy and safe conditions. The Union stressed that all necessary measures to protect teachers and students must be taken when a COVID-19 case is confirmed in any educational institution in accordance with the health protocol. It also called for conducting tests to all suspected cases and disinfecting the educational institution which has confirmed cases. Opposition MP Mongi Rahoui called for the approval of a total lockdown in the country for three weeks. He indicated that the epidemiological situation is likely to have gone out of control after the number of confirmed infections exceeded 1,000 cases in one day.
