The Smile Initiative, an initiative of Bahrain Future Society for Youth, intensified its efforts to provide psychosocial support to children with cancer and their parents in view of the Corona pandemic. This comes within the framework of the initiative"s perception of the significance of such support in stimulating the immune system of sick children and aiding them to pass the critical stages of treatment on the one hand, and mitigating the negative repercussions of home quarantine on the other hand. Head of psychological support at Smile, Safaa Al Nasser, said in a statement on the occasion of the World Mental Health Day that is observed on Oct. 10 every year, that Smile initiative intensified its efforts by providing its services remotely without any interruption. "We are keen to transfer all our programs and events to the Internet, as a commitment to precautionary measures and social distancing, and at the same time we have ensured that the sick children affiliated with the initiative interact with our activities and achieve the desired benefit." Al Nasser said. Al Nasser pointed out that "Smile" initiative this year implemented a complete remote summer program for sick children, which included many activities and various workshops such as painting, handicrafts, and others. She explained that the initiative"s volunteers carried out other outdoor activities, including the distribution of sterilizing kits, masks, and other tools to sick children in their homes more than once, in addition to the distribution of 65 electronic devices to assist them in studying remotely. "It"s essential for the child with cancer to obtain extensive psychological support from his family and society, in addition to the need to inspire him to confront the disease with courage, face reality and accept external effects such as hair loss or shape change positively. This will help him to overcome the difficult stages of the disease, especially the first shock, then to move forward to the stage of accepting the new situation, and realizing that he is a person who is positively distinguished from his peers and has a more prominent ability to give, and more ability to heal, God willing," She said.
