King Abdul Aziz’s historic palace is a 4,000 square meter mud-brick, stone and clay castle in the village of Laynah, the oldest settlement in northern Saudi Arabia. Built after the unification of the Kingdom to serve as the headquarters of the emirate in the region, the 85-year-old palace is considered as one of the country’s major historical sites because of its heritage and architectural importance. The palace was the residence of King Abdul Aziz on the outskirts of the Kingdom, and was used to manage the development of the northern border area. Archaeological writings tell the history and year of its construction. Each corner of its four pillars feature a circular tower with a large wooden gate. The palace contains several rooms for family and guests, as well as a mosque, an old well and a large courtyard. Laynah municipality has developed the town’s heritage and created a number of architectural features characterizing the village. The village is home to important historical and archaeological sites and more than 300 wells, some still in operation.
