Holy Bread...selected in IDFA Competition for Mid-Length Documentary

Iranian film “Holy Bread” directed by late Rahim Zabihi, has been selected in the IDFA Competition for Mid-Length Documentary. Produced by Touraj Aslani, the film is representing Iran in its first international presence in 33rd the IDFA Competition in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The ELI Image, led by Elaheh Noubakht, is the distributer of this film in abroad. The different sections of the festival include feature films, semi-length films, student documentaries, children and document, luminous and fronthlight. This year, IDFA will take place in Amsterdam cinemas, and 6 films, including the festival’s opening film, will also screen in cinemas throughout the Netherlands. Additionally, for audiences within the Netherlands, there will be online screenings at fixed times every day with talks before and after the film. From November 18 to December 6, cinema fans can watch documentary films and new media projects together again and follow up with the filmmakers, protagonists, and other speakers in person and online Kurdish filmmaker Rahim Zabihi was considered one of the prominent Kurdish cinematique professionals, directing tens of short films and winning local and international awards. Zabihi was born in 1971 in Baneh in Iranian Kurdistan. He was prolific filmmaker, winning many local and international awards. His movies include: “Hawar,” “Satellite,” “Goriz”. “End of War”, “Stress”, “A Man Who Took a Journey”.” His films were highly welcomed in several films’ festivals in Tehran, Brazil, France, Hamburg, Isfahan, Varesh and Rain film festivals. He also managed to win the best film from Clermont-Ferrand film festival for Hawar . He was a member of selecting board in Diar Bakr Film Festival in Turkey, Sulaymaniyah Short Film Festival in 2004, Raniyeh Film Festival in 2005. He was the assistance and programmer of “Horse” film produced by Mahdi Omid in 2005 and member of directing film dubbed ” Wind Loneliness” in 2004. His film was mainly focused in the violence against women and children and the victims of war. He has been presented in over 50 national and international films festival and events and managed to snatched several prestigious awards. He has been directors of the “Wlate Afsaneh”,” Santa Clause Cried” and “The Next Day”. The “Wlate Afsaneh” has very human look to the issue of war and the toppling of Ba’ath regime in Iraq. This film was also displayed in Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland. The late Iranian Kurdistan film director, Zabihi, and his brother Keywan died following a tragic car accident after their vehicle caught fire in the Nizro district in Baneh in Iranian Kurdistan, on Iran’s western border. Holy Bread documents the highly dangerous work of Kurdish kulbars, workers who try to support their families by transporting goods across the Iranian border. On foot, they carry their loads along mountain paths that are rocky, steep, and either slippery due to snow or blisteringly hot. Along the way, many of them suffer injuries, die in blizzards, or are shot by border police. The powerful scenes of the men’s journeys are matched by their harrowing stories. The film crew followed these workers for nine years to document the impact of living like a human pack mule.
