The Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah stressed on Tuesday that no novel coronavirus infections have been reported among the Umrah pilgrims arriving from abroad. Some 400 pilgrims, mainly from Pakistan and Indonesia, are in “stable condition” and “none have or are suspected to have contracted the virus at the moment.” The pilgrims are abiding by the health regulations and precautions to ensure that they will be able to perform the Umrah in coming days, it added. The worshipers will begin the holy rituals on Wednesday after completing a mandatory three-day period of self-isolation. Ten percent of hotel rooms were dedicated to housing the pilgrims upon their arrival for the isolation period. Meanwhile, a second flight with Indonesian pilgrims landed at King Abdulaziz Airport on Tuesday. Deputy Minister of Hajj and Umrah Dr. Abdulfattah bin Sulaiman Mashat told Asharq Al-Awsat that the authorities will provide all the needs of the pilgrims to ensure that they perform the rituals smoothly and safely. Any pilgrim showing symptoms of the virus will be treated. Should they recover fully and show no side effects, then they will be able to perform the Umrah before their visa expires, he revealed. He said that the health regulations apply to all pilgrims coming from abroad, including those from the Gulf Cooperation Council. The only thing separating the Gulf pilgrims from others is that they do not require an entry visa to travel to Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia is expected to receive some 10,000 pilgrims per day and the worshipers will be allowed to perform the Umrah in batches of 3,300 at a time and within three hours. Once a batch completes the rituals, they are allowed to leave Makkah’s Grand Mosque and a new batch arrives after the holy sites are disinfected. Saudi Arabia has been resuming the pilgrimage in stages since the beginning of October. The Kingdom has allowed citizens and residents to start performing Umrah as of Oct.4 at 30 percent capacity, or 6,000 pilgrims a day. It opened for Muslims on Nov. 1. No virus cases have been reported among the pilgrims.
