RIYADH — Maj. Gen. Muhammad Al-Bassami, director of the Traffic Directorate, said that the directorate would begin automatic surveillance of the violations of changing lanes without signaling in all regions of the Kingdom effective from Jan. 1, 2021. As part of efforts to strengthen the traffic safety measures, the directorate has started implementing this regulation in the major cities of Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam from Wednesday, Nov. 11. Speaking to Okaz/Saudi Gazette, Al-Bassami said the wrong behaviors of some motorists are the major cause of traffic congestion and accidents. “Some drivers used to move from the far left to the far right at the signals or intersections or exit to the side roads without signaling and often recklessly while some others overtake in a wrong way. “All these behaviors will be monitored by an advanced electronic automatic system that would identify the violating vehicle in a precise way,” he said. Al-Bassami said that the Traffic Directorate is trying to strengthen traffic safety measures and put an end to all wrong behaviors. “The directorate would enhance awareness of drivers so that everyone can enjoy safe trips,” he added.
