LONDON: “Truth Seekers” has built up buzz due to the fact that it sees friends and long-time collaborators Nick Frost and Simon Pegg (“Shaun of the Dead,” “Hot Fuzz”) reunite for the first time since 2013’s “The World’s End.” In fairness, the two of them don’t actually share a lot of screen time — Pegg’s is more of a supporting role, which means “Truth Seekers” is most definitely Frost’s show. For the latest updates, follow us on Instagram @arabnews.lifestyle Frost plays Gus, a broadband installer and part-time ghost hunter who reluctantly takes on a new partner, the mild-mannered Elton (Samson Kayo). The pair’s first job together takes a supernatural turn and, next thing we know, Gus and Elton stumble upon Astrid (Emma D’Arcy), a girl on the run from a series of spooky apparitions. The unlikely trio, aided by Gus’ father and Elton’s agoraphobic sister, uncover evidence of a supernatural conspiracy masterminded by the shady professor Dr. Peter Toynbee (played with absolute glee by “The Mighty Boosh” star Julian Barratt) that brings the series’ myriad storylines together in a conveniently neat (arguably too neat) showdown. “Truth Seekers” is unashamedly silly, rather than riotously funny, while the horror elements are actually surprisingly dark. It’s a peculiar mix, but one that works. Not exclusively, however, and there are some running gags that don’t quite land. But Frost’s middle-aged, lovable everyman makes a good foil for Kayo and D’Arcy’s younger roles, especially when their respective backstories are revealed. And though some episodes feel a bit light in terms of advancing the plot, the finale brings all the threads together in impressive fashion. “Truth Seekers” is not really the Pegg/Frost double act most viewers would have been hoping for. But it is good fun, good-natured and well-executed. There’s a couple of great surprise cameos, too, and the setup for a second series hints that there’s plenty more fun to be had.
