Up to 10-year jail and SR5 million in fine for misusing websites for terrorist acts

RIYADH — The Public Prosecution on Tuesday warned that stringent penalties would be slapped on those who misuse the Internet and electronic sites for spreading terrorist and extremist ideas and promoting terrorist outfits. Those found guilty of such crimes will be awarded a maximum jail term of 10 years or fines up to SR5 million or of both. The Public Prosecution said that violations in this regard include creation of websites for organizations and ideologies that are classified by the concerned authorities in the Kingdom as terrorist outfits. It is also banned to support these ideologies or sympathize with them or promote them through electronic websites and various means of social media or circulating these ideologies through any other forms or publish their content via online with the purpose of contacting leaders or members of these outfits or circulate their ideas or funding them. The Public Prosecution also warned that publishing any information related to making incendiary devices or explosives or any tools that are meant to use for terrorist activities would also face penalties.
