Global coronavirus cases crosses 58 million

LONDON — Coronavirus is continuing its spread across the world with more than 58 million (58.149,129) confirmed cases in 190 countries and about 1,381,286 deaths. The virus is surging in many regions and countries that had apparent success in suppressing initial outbreaks are also seeing infections rise again. North America is currently seeing the steepest rise in new cases. The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that health workers and health systems "are being pushed to the breaking point". WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said more cases of COVID-19 had been reported in the past four weeks than in the first six months of the pandemic. The US has recorded more than 12 million cases and more than 250,000 deaths from coronavirus, the highest figures in the world. Daily cases have been at record levels since early November, and in a tweet on Saturday President Donald Trump appeared to admit that the disease is "running wild" across the country. India has recorded 44,059 new cases of the novel coronavirus, taking its total to 9.14 million, data from the Health Ministry showed on Monday. India has the second-highest number of infections in the world, after the United States, but the rate of increase in India has dipped since it hit a peak in September. New daily cases have come in at fewer than 50,000 for more than two weeks, according to a Reuters tally. Deaths rose by 511, according to the latest health ministry data, taking the total to 133,738. In Moscow, the Russian Health Ministry reported on Monday the deaths of 361 patients from COVID-19, the infection of 25,173 and the recovery of 16,002 in the last 24 hours. The Russian anti-coronavirus center indicated that the death toll increased to 36,540, while confirmed cases reached 2,114,502. The total recoveries reached 1,611445 cases. In Berlin, the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Germany increased by 10,864 to 929,133, data from the Robert Koch Institute for infectious diseases showed on Monday. The reported death toll rose by 90 to 14,112, the tally showed. In Brussels, total coronavirus cases in Belgium increased to 558,779 with 1,875 new infections reported the health authorities on Monday. It also reported 96 COVID-19 deaths in the last 24 hours, raising the death toll to 15,618. In Tokyo, Japan reported 593 new cases of the coronavirus on Monday, raising the nation’s total number to 133,710, the Health Ministry and local authorities said. The country’s cumulative death toll stood at 1,988. Tokyo added 314 new cases, topping 300 for the sixth straight day, which brought the total cases in the Japanese capital to 38,022. South Korea added 271 new coronavirus cases on Monday bringing the country’s total caseload to 31,004 said Yonhap News Agency. The country reported four new deaths from COVID-19, raising the total to 509, the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. Indonesia"s coronavirus caseload has surpassed the half million mark, with 4,442 new infections reported on Monday, data from the country"s Health Ministry showed. Indonesia saw 118 more COVID-19 deaths, bringing its total fatalities to 16,002. Southeast Asia"s biggest and most populous country has the region"s highest number of COVID-19 cases and deaths. Infections have been reported in more than 210 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in China in December 2019. In Khartoum, Sudan registered Monday 213 new positive cases of coronavirus and four new deaths in the past 24 hours. The Sudanese Health Ministry said the total number of registered positive cases increased to 16,052, including 1,197 deaths, while the total number of recoveries reached 9,737. — Agencies
