Abdullah Mofter Al-Shamrani has been the chief executive officer of the Saudi Geological Survey (SGS) since November following an announcement made by the organization’s board of directors. Al-Shamrani gained a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Riyadh’s King Saud University in 1989. During a career spanning more than three decades, he has held several leadership positions in various companies such as the Arabian Petrochemical Co., European Petrochemical Co., and the Jubail United Petrochemical Co. He started his career with Saudi Basic Industries Corp. (SABIC) in the field of manufacturing, working his way up through the managerial ranks to become head of SABIC’s largest petrochemical company, Petrokemya, which was founded in 1981. He has also been chairman of the Saudi European Petrochemical Co. (Ibn Zahr) and executive president of Petrokemya. Al-Shamrani has been assigned to various SABIC affiliates, serving for three years as president of Jubail United Petrochemical Co. and for a similar period with Al-Jubail Fertilizer Co. (Al-Bayroni). In addition, he worked as operation general manager for the Saudi Arabian Fertilizer Co. (SAFCO) and the National Chemical Fertilizer Co. (Ibn Al-Baytar), and was also a board member of Ibn Al-Baytar and the Saudi Arabian Mining Co. (Maaden Phosphate). He has led a number of petrochemical grassroot megaprojects with different global engineering, procurement, and construction contractors from inceptive stages to commissioning and commercialization and has fronted several marketing committees for various petrochemical products within SABIC.
