LONDON — The overall number of global coronavirus cases has topped 64.4 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 1.49 million, according to the latest figures. In its update on Thursday, the University"s Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed that the current global caseload and death toll stood at 64,447,657 and 1,491,559, respectively. The US is the worst-hit country with the world"s highest number of cases and deaths at 13,916,543 and 273,316, respectively, according to the CSSE. India comes in second place in terms of cases at 9,499,413, while the country"s death toll soared to 138,122. Meanwhile, India"s daily rise in coronavirus infections stayed below 40,000 for a fourth straight day, as 35,551 new cases took the tally to 9.53 million, health ministry data showed on Thursday. Deaths in India rose by 526, taking the toll to 138,648, the ministry added. Iran’s total number of coronavirus cases hit 1 million on Thursday with 13,922 new cases recorded in the past 24 hours, the health ministry said, as the Middle East’s worst-affected country’s death toll reached 49,348. Reuters reported that ministry spokeswoman Sima Sadat Lari told state TV 358 people had died from the coronavirus since Wednesday and confirmed cases of Covid-19 infection had reached 1,003,494. Russia confirmed a record 28,145 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, including 7,750 in Moscow, taking the national total to 2,375,546. Authorities also reported 554 deaths in the last 24 hours, pushing the official death toll to 41,607 since the pandemic began. The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Germany increased by 22,046 to 1,106,789 and the reported death toll rose by 479 to 17,602, data from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for infectious diseases showed on Thursday.
