RIYADH — The Human Rights Commission (HRC) stressed the need to protect workers from the bitter cold at their workplace and accommodation. The Commission issued directives to make the necessary arrangements to help them work in the winter season in a way that they are not being subjected to exposure to cold waves as well as to having negative effects on their health, especially due to working in open workplaces. The HRC called on all to adhere to safety and health regulations in the work environment as a major factor in preserving workers’ rights as it reflect in their work stability and help raise positively the level of work performance. “Protecting the safety and health of workers is a duty for all the concerned parties, and the Kingdom has enacted regulations that ensure the application of the best occupational safety and health standards and the protection of workers’ rights. “The foremost of which is the Labor Law, which included many articles concerned with the safety and health of workers, in addition to many decisions, regulations and initiatives that were issued in this regard, such as the bylaw of the Occupational Health and Safety Department, and the National Strategic Program for Occupational Safety and Health,” the commission said in a statement. The HRC called for the importance of providing adequate housing that meets the standards of protection from cold, especially on such days when temperatures record sharp drops, which threaten the health of workers living in there, as adequate housing is one of the components of an adequate standard of living as a basic factor for the enjoyment of rights.
