Forward Dylan Larkin was named the 37th captain of the Detroit Red Wings, the team announced on Wednesday. Larkin, a Detroit-area native and former University of Michigan star, has served as an alternate captain in each of the past two seasons. The 24-year-old will be the first captain for the Red Wings since Henrik Zetterberg retired on Sept. 14, 2018. Larkin recorded team-leading totals in assists (34) and points (53) in 71 games last season. His 19 goals trailed only Tyler Bertuzzi on the club. “Dylan is an extremely competitive and driven player who sets the standard for dedication and conduct for the Red Wings,” Red Wings executive vice president and general manager Steve Yzerman said. “This is the right time to name our new captain and we’re certain Dylan is ready to take on the responsibility. He will be an outstanding leader for us, both on and off the ice.” Larkin has collected 266 points (107 goals, 159 assists) since being selected by the Red Wings with the 15th overall pick of the 2014 NHL Draft.
