WASHINGTON — The United States announced fresh Iran sanctions on Friday related to conventional arms and to the metals industry. The new sanctions are part of the President Donald Trump administration’s maximum pressure campaign against Iran to force it to join negotiations on reducing its nuclear program. Commenting on the move, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said: "The proliferation of Iranian conventional weapons threatens regional and international security." Sanctions were imposed on the Iranian maritime and aerospace industries organizations. The US State Department stressed that Iranian weapons fuel conflicts in Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, and Yemen, adding that "Iranian non-conventional weapons are the regime"s means of practicing global terrorism." It added. "Iran is using boat, missile, and drone attacks in the campaign to spread terrorism internationally." The US State Department called on all countries to ban the sale or supply of weapons to Iran, stressing Washington’s commitment to continue pressure on the Iranian regime to radically change its behavior. Earlier this week, the US Treasury blacklisted three individuals and 16 entities, including companies affiliated with the Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. The sanctions included two Iranian organizations controlled by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said the two organizations enable the Iranian elite to continue the corrupt monarchy system for large sectors of the Iranian economy. — Agencies
