A new round of consultations over a prisoner swap between the legitimate Yemeni government and Iran-backed Houthi militias will kick off in the Jordanian capital, Amman, on Sunday. Informed sources told Asharq Al-Awsat that all sides are prepared to begin this second round of UN-sponsored talks. They described the conditions as “positive so far.” A diplomatic source said the whole process is “positive” and this will help in building confidence between the warring parties. The talks will begin even as the United States designated the Houthis as terrorist some two weeks ago. The Yemeni government welcomed the move, saying it was a step in the right direction in working with the Houthis towards peace. In October, the government and Houthis carried out the largest prisoner exchange since the militias’ coup in 2014. More than 1,000 detainees held by both sides were swapped in a series of flights between several airports in Yemen and neighboring Saudi Arabia.
