Spring training roundup: Brewers beat Padres despite Blake Snell's debut

Pablo Reyes belted a three-run homer in the fourth inning to help the Milwaukee Brewers record an 8-5 eight-inning victory over the host San Diego Padres on Wednesday at Peoria, Ariz. Padres left-hander Blake Snell made his spring debut for his new team, striking out one and walking one during a 15-pitch inning. The 2018 American League Cy Young Award winner was acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays in the offseason. “It’s definitely weird. I’m not gonna lie, but it’s a good weird,” Snell said of his new surroundings. “I like my teammates a lot. I got comfortable here a lot quicker than I thought I would. It’s just a really cool place to be.” Reyes’ blast gave the Brewers a 4-0 lead before San Diego recovered to tie the score at 5 on Gosuke Katoh’s three-run homer in the seventh inning. Milwaukee’s Garrett Mitchell hit a tiebreaking single in the eighth and the Brewers added runs on a wild pitch and sacrifice fly. Cardinals 14, Mets 9 Jose Rondon hit a two-run homer and also delivered a run-scoring triple to help St. Louis beat visiting New York at Jupiter, Fla. The Mets had six extra-base hits out of 13 total and were 6-of-21 with runners in scoring position. Marlins 8, Nationals 5 Adam Duvall clubbed a three-run homer to help visiting Miami slide past Washington. Kyle Schwarber and Josh Bell hit solo shots for the Nationals. Angels 6, Rangers 2 (6 innings) Shohei Ohtani slugged a two-run homer to help Los Angeles defeat visiting Texas at Tempe, Ariz. Steele Walker went deep for the Rangers. Red Sox 14, Twins 6 (7 innings) Bobby Dalbec homered twice and drove in three runs and Hunter Renfroe also had three RBIs as Boston outslugged host Minnesota at Fort Myers, Fla. Nelson Cruz hit a three-run homer for the Twins, while Mitch Garver and Kyle Garlick hit solo shots. Rays 3, Pirates 1 (6 innings) Wander Franco hit a solo homer and Austin Meadows added a two-run blast as Tampa Bay defeated visiting Pittsburgh at Port Charlotte, Fla. The Pirates had just two hits and were 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position. Phillies 4, Tigers 2 (7 innings) Andrew Knapp smacked a two-run double to cap a four-run third inning as visiting Philadelphia knocked off Detroit at Lakeland, Fla. Niko Goodrum had two of the Tigers’ five hits. Orioles 8, Braves 1 (7 innings) DJ Stewart and Austin Hays belted homers to help Baltimore roll past host Atlanta at Venice, Fla. Ozzie Albies went deep for the Braves. Diamondbacks 9, Indians 4 (7 innings) Christian Walker hit a two-run homer and Domingo Leyba added a solo shot as Arizona knocked off host Cleveland at Goodyear, Ariz. Franmil Reyes homered for the Indians. Royals 6, White Sox 5 (6 innings) Edward Olivares delivered a two-run double to cap a three-run fifth inning as Kansas City rallied to beat visiting Chicago at Surprise, Ariz. Zack Collins homered for the White Sox. Rockies 10, Athletics 7 (7 innings) Colton Welker stroked an unusual three-run tiebreaking single in the sixth inning as Colorado recovered from a 7-0 deficit to stun visiting Oakland at Scottsdale, Ariz. Matt Olson had three RBIs for the Athletics. Mariners 8, Cubs 8 Jack Reinheimer smacked a tying two-run homer with none out in the ninth inning as Seattle tied host Chicago at Mesa, Ariz. Joc Pederson, Anthony Rizzo and Michael Hermosillo went deep for the Cubs.
