(Adds details) March 10 (Reuters) - Russia’s flagship airline Aeroflot reported a fourth-quarter net loss more than six times higher than the previous year amid coronavirus-related curbs on passenger traffic. Aeroflot reported a net loss of 43.80 billion roubles ($594 million) for the final quarter of the year compared to 6.79 billion roubles a year earlier. Russia, like other countries, saw a sharp fall in passenger traffic last year because of coronavirus restrictions, followed by a gradual recovery in recent months. Its domestic traffic, however, was less affected as the country refrained from imposing a complete lockdown during a new wave of infections. Aeroflot’s passenger traffic in 2020 halved from pre-pandemic levels, though it was down as much as 90% in the second quarter. The company said on Wednesday it maintains a conservative approach to capacity deployment in addition to the seasonal winter decline. Aeroflot’s net loss reflects “a number of one-off adjustments”, said the company’s deputy CEO for commerce and finance Andrey Chikhanchin. Excluding these items, the net loss was 32.9 billion roubles, he added. Russia’s airline traffic in the fourth quarter declined by 43% compared to a year ago, showing the second fastest recovery after China, while in Europe it slumped by 71%, VTB Capital analyst Elena Sakhnova said. She sees passenger traffic growing by 56% in Russia to 108 million passengers in 2021. A bright spot for Aeroflot was its low-cost airline, Pobeda, which mostly operates domestic flights and which managed to increase its passenger traffic by 7.6% in the second half of the year. The company was profitable on annual accounts, said Chikhanchin. Aeroflot said its total debt rose by 31.1% in 2020 as a weaker rouble led to the revaluation of its leasing liabilities. Shares in Aeroflot rose on the Moscow Exchange by 0.4% as of 1631 GMT.
