RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s Food and Drug Authority (FDA) confirmed on Tuesday it has not received any reports of cases of blood clots or thrombosis from people who have received COVID-19 vaccines. The authority said it was continuously monitoring the safety of the vaccines available in the Kingdom by studying cases of side effects and the local and international scientific evidence and data available, in coordination with the health and regulatory authorities. The FDA said it was also monitoring the safety of vaccines with manufacturers, the health ministry and international regulatory bodies, through its membership of the International Coalition of Medicines Regulatory Authorities, which includes the World Health Organization and meets periodically to exchange data and information about vaccines. The FDA said that any developments about vaccines and their safety would be announced through its official channels and called on the public to follow approved sources. The Kingdom recorded five new coronavirus related deaths on Tuesday, raising the total number of fatalities to 6,578. According to the ministry, the highest number of cases were recorded in the capital Riyadh with 137, followed by Makkah with 71, the Eastern Province with 51, Hail recorded 22 and Qassim confirmed 17 cases. The ministry also announced that 204 patients had recovered from COVID-19, bringing the total number of recoveries in the Kingdom to 373,130. The health ministry called on everyone to register to obtain the vaccine, and renewed its call on the public to adhere to the measures and abide by instructions. More than 2.4 million vaccine doses have been administered so far, at a rate of about 122,000 doses per day, according to the health ministry. As part of health measures, about 14.5 million PCR tests have also been conducted in the Kingdom since the start of the pandemic, including 53,290 in the past 24 hours. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Dawah and Guidance temporarily closed eight mosques in six regions after some worshippers tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the total closed within 37 days to 294 mosques, 276 of which have reopened after sterilization and ensuring they were safe. The coronavirus pandemic has affected over 120 million people globally and the death toll has reached around 2.66 million.
