Saudi Arabia, Iraq set to ink key pacts during Al-Kadhimi’s visit Wednesday

RIYADH — Several key pacts aimed at further bolstering bilateral relations in vital areas will be inked during the visit of Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi to the Kingdom on Wednesday, according to Saudi Arabia’s Ambassador to Iraq Abdul Aziz Al-Shammari. “The visit of Al-Kadhimi comes at an important time, and a number of political, security, and economic issues will be figured in his talks with the Saudi leaders,” he said. Al-Shammari stressed the significance of bilateral ties between the two countries. “There is an intention to increase the number of border crossings with Iraq and the Arar border crossing, which was opened in November 2020 after a hiatus of 30 years, currently operates around the clock. There are continuous meetings underway to complete the procedures for the construction of an international stadium as a gift of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman to the people of Iraq,” he said adding that the meeting of the Saudi and Iraqi Coordination Council will be held and this will be followed by an important meeting of businessmen from both the countries in the near future. Meanwhile, major Iraqi newspapers covered extensively on Tuesday the phone conversation held between Al-Kadhimi and Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman about the Green Middle East Initiative. The newspaper Al-Zaman reported that the two leaders discussed the initiative that aims to partner with the countries of the region to plant 50 billion trees as the largest reforestation program in the world and the importance of raising the production efficiency of oil production processes and benefiting from Saudi Arabia’s leadership in this realm. Saudi Arabia plans to plant 10 billion trees inside the Kingdom during the coming decades, the newspaper pointed out.
