Phil Harrison Film choice The Elephant Man (David Lynch, 1980), 9pm, BBC Four David Lynch, a connoisseur of the grotesque, directs this sad and moving true story with admirable restraint. John Hurt gets under the skin of John Merrick, a man whose disabilities belie a fine sensibility. Anthony Hopkins is the good doctor who rescues him from a Victorian fairground freak show.
