Police investigating the death of police community support officer Julia James have discounted a man they earlier said they wanted to speak to. Earlier on Friday, Kent police released of a man they said could be of “crucial importance” to the investigation. However, on Friday night, the force said the man has now been identified and they are no longer appealing for information about him. James was found dead in Akholt Wood near her home in Snowdown, Kent, on 27 April. She died from significant head wounds. Assistant chief constable Tom Richards said: “As throughout the investigation, the power of the public and their support has helped this investigation and I want to take this opportunity to thank them for getting in touch to help us. “I can confirm we have identified the man in the photo and we no longer need the media to run his image, nor do we need further information about him at this time.” Police have yet to establish a motive for the 53-year-old’s murder, which they are treating as an “awful isolated incident”, not linked to any other incidents and offences at this stage. The force said on Thursday it was broadening the search area to include “a number of other locations” in addition to the woodland where she was found. Crimestoppers is offering a reward of up to £10,000 for anonymous information that leads to her killer being convicted. Assistant chief constable Richards had told a press conference that police now had more than 1,000 pieces of information provided by the public. They were interested in any relevant information relating to the period between 1pm and 4.30pm on the day of the killing. On Wednesday, police issued an image of the police community support officer in the clothes she was wearing before she was killed. The picture shows her walking her jack russell, Toby, while wearing a light blue waterproof coat, blue jeans and dark Wellington-style brown boots. Police said it was the same clothing, apart from the gloves, which she wore on the day she died.
