JEDDAH: The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) praised the efforts made by Saudi Arabia, the headquarters state and the chair of the Islamic Summit, to exert pressure on Israel to stop its actions in Jerusalem and its attacks on the Gaza Strip. The OIC praised King Salman, head of the Islamic Summit, for confirming to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas that the Kingdom will push to halt Israeli measures in Jerusalem by communicating with the relevant parties to put pressure on Israel. The OIC also praised the efforts of member states to stop the bloodshed, appreciating the role of the Islamic countries, UN Security Council member states, and the current presidency of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the OIC in promoting a cessation of hostilities. The OIC held on May 16 an open-ended emergency meeting of the executive committee at the level of foreign ministers, at the invitation of Saudi Arabia, to discuss the violent events and Israeli attacks in Palestine, especially in Jerusalem and the vicinity of Al-Aqsa Mosque. The meeting produced a resolution that included its condemnation of the continued Israeli colonization of the Occupied Palestinian Territories, including East Jerusalem, and the establishment of an apartheid system, specifically through building settlements, destroying Palestinian property, building an expansion wall, confiscating properties, and forcibly evicting and displacing Palestinians from their homes and land. Following the meeting’s resolution, the UN General Assembly committed to taking political action after holding an emergency session on Thursday to discuss the attacks carried out by Israeli forces in Palestinian territories. The OIC reminded the international community of the importance of moving to a permanent settlement in accordance with the two-state solution and the reference of the Arab Peace Initiative.
