An online petition calling for the dismissal of the teacher involved in the incident, at The de Ferrers Academy in the town of Burton, has received over 1,000 signatures, and alleges that the children were told they were supporting a “terrorist group.” Headteacher Kathy Hardy, in a letter to parents, warned: “Students who do not follow school rules and expectations will be sanctioned in line with our behaviour policy. We urge everyone to follow two of our values in this instance: ‘Be kind’ and ‘choose wisely’.” Local police said they were attending the school over what they called an “ongoing incident.” It comes in the same week as a school in the city of Leeds was picketed after pupils were told to remove badges and posters they had brought to classes in support of the Palestinian cause.
