Group of nations seeks reparations from Iran for Ukraine flight's downing

JEDDAH — A group of countries comprising Canada, Sweden, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom has made a claim for reparations against Iran over its downing of a Ukraine jetliner, on behalf of victims" families, calling Tehran to set a date to formally begin negotiations. The group, which is known as the International Coordination and Response Group for the victims of Flight PS752, issued a joint statement on Thursday calling the downing of the plane, as well as Iran"s "omissions" in an investigation report on the crash, "amount to breaches of international law." Iran shot down Ukraine International Airlines flight PS752 shortly after take-off from its capital Tehran on Jan. 8, 2020, killing all 176 people aboard, including 85 Canadian citizens and permanent residents, according to an AFP report. “We have made a series of demands that include, but is not limited to, an acknowledgment of wrongdoing and a full accounting of the events that led to the downing, a public apology, the return of missing and stolen belongings of the victims, assurances of non-repetition in the most concrete terms, transparency in the criminal prosecutions in accordance with the rule of law, and equitable compensation for material and moral damages suffered by the victims and their families regardless of nationality and in an amount consistent with its obligations under international law,” the statement read.
