US Charge d’Affaires David Greene unveiled the new American Legation Exhibition at the National Library in Rabat to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the opening of the US Legation in Tangier. In his opening statements, Greene thanked the Moroccan officials for their presence at the event. He also highlighted the history of the American Legation Museum in Tangier and its impact on US-Moroccan ties. “It’s a living symbol of friendship between the US and Morocco,” said Greene. The American Ligation served as a US diplomatic mission and now operates as a museum, cultural center, and research library. Morocco was the first country in the world to recognize the US’ independence back in 1777 during the reign of Sultan Muhammed ben Abdellah, and the presidency of George Washington. In 2021, the US Embassy joined Moroccan partners in celebrating the Legation as a symbol of the US-Moroccan friendship. Bicentennial activities take the form of a range of cultural, outreach, and educational programs until late September before moving to Casablanca.
