A man has been charged with the murder of Sgt Matt Ratana, a Metropolitan police officer who was shot dead at a Croydon custody centre last year. Louis de Zoysa was charged with the killing on Tuesday. The 23-year-old, from Banstead, Surrey, was also charged with possession of a firearm and possession of ammunition. He will appear at Westminster magistrates court on Wednesday via video link. De Zoysa has been in hospital under police guard with a “stable, non-life threatening condition” since the fatal incident on 25 September. The Met said investigators had been in “close liaison” with his medical team and the Crown Prosecution Service since. They said recent changes to his condition and a charging decision by the CPS had led to the decision to charge him with murder and the other two offences on Tuesday afternoon. The Met said Ratana’s partner and son had been informed of the development.
