RIYADH — The Saudi weightlifter Siraj Al-Saleem secured qualification from the Asian continent for the Olympic Games, scheduled to be held in the Japanese capital Tokyo from July 23 to Aug. 8. He will compete in the 61 kg category weight competitions, and will join fellow weightlifter Mahmoud Al-Ahmeed, whose qualification was announced a few days ago. Ahmeed’s qualification for the Olympics came after he emerged as the topper among the Asian participants in the classification approved by the International Weightlifting Federation for the group of weightlifters competing in the category of 73 kg, marking a new achievement for Saudi weightlifters and a continuation of the Kingdom’s presence in this great global sports forum. Al-Saleem is the 10th individual Saudi to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics. Minister of Sports and Chairman of the Saudi Arabian Olympic Committee Prince Abdulaziz Bin Turki Al-Faisal shared the joy of Al-Saleem’s qualification by congratulating him through a tweet, saying: “Congratulations to the Saudi weightlifter Siraj Al-Saleem for his qualification for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, all the best, hero.” For his part, the 25-year-old Al-Saleem expressed his great joy in qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics for the first time. He stressed that the dream continued to haunt him in every championship in which he participated. It seemed the qualification was coming his way with every step following his silver in the Asian Championship and before that the gold of the International Solidarity Championship. These two successes were the key to qualification and move among the top in the world rankings among qualifiers for the Olympics.
