Diriyah to host Formula E race in January for fourth year in a row

JEDDAH — Diriyah will host the Formula E race for the fourth year in a row, Minister of Sports Prince Abdulaziz Bin Turki Al-Faisal, who is also the president of the Saudi Arabian Olympic Committee, announced on Friday. “For the fourth consecutive year, the historical Diriyah hosts #Formula_E_Diriyah. Continuous international events due to the unlimited support from our ambitious leadership,” the sports minister tweeted. The announcement by Prince Abdulaziz Bin Turki comes after the International Automobile Federation unveiled the schedule for the first and second rounds of the Formula E race for electric cars. The two-day mega event will be held in the historic Saudi city of Diriyah near Riyadh, beginning on Jan. 28, 2022. The federation also announced the preliminary calendar of the eighth edition of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. According to the calendar for 2021-2022, there will be 16 races to be held in 12 cities spread over four continents. Saudi Arabia has hosted three consecutive editions including the last one which was held under floodlights at night for the first time, drawing a tremendous response despite the global outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. The race was held amid strict coronavirus preventive protocols to maintain the safety of the contestants and organizers of the world-class contest which saw the participation of 24 contestants representing 12 teams.
