Surgical separation of conjoined twin Ayisha to be held Thursday

RIYADH — The surgical separation of the parasitic twin Ayisha Ahmed Saeed Mahaimud from Al-Mahra governorate of Yemen will be held at King Abdullah Specialist Children Hospital in King Abdulaziz Medical City under the Ministry of National Guard here on Thursday. This was in implementation of the directives of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman. This was announced by Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, adviser at the Royal Court and general supervisor of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief). Al-Rabeeah, who is also the head of the medical and surgical team, said that 25 doctors and specialists as well as technicians and nursing staff will take part in the operation, which is expected to take about 8 and a half hours as it is to be carried out in eight stages. He said that the parasitic twin Ayisha is a full-fledged child with a pelvis and additional double lower limbs. There are also congenital defects in the lower urinary and reproductive system. This would be the 50th surgical separation of conjoined twins, carried out by the medical team led by Dr. Al-Rabeeah, showing the Kingdom’s humanitarian gesture and pioneering experience in this noble field over the last three decades. During this period, studies had also been carried out on 117 Siamese twins cases from 22 countries representing three continents around the world. The medical team performed successfully the operation No. 49 for twins conjoined to the chest and abdomen. On behalf of the members of the medical team, and on his behalf, Dr. Al-Rabeeah thanked King Salman and Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman for the great support that the medical team and the health sector in the Kingdom receive from the wise leadership and for the noble humanitarian gestures they offer for those in need from any parts of the world.
