The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor (EuroMedHR) and Libyan Crimes Watch (LCW) said Hundreds of Syrian migrants are being held in Libyan prisons. The Geneva-based non-profit EuroMedHR announced that the Libyan Coast Guard arrested over the past four months 800 Syrians while trying to migrate to Europe via the Mediterranean. They were taken to four detention centers in Tripoli: al-Zawiya Prison, Abu Salim, Ain Zara, and Gout al-Shaal. The monitor added that several relatives of the detainees indicating that they live in horrible humanitarian conditions and are exposed to complex violations that affect their safety and dignity. They also reported that after the Libyan Coast Guard intercepted their boats at sea, they were detained and assaulted. The detention centers lack the most basic humanitarian requirements. Asharq Al-Awsat tried to contact the illegal immigration authority in Tripoli, but it declined to comment. However, the monitor stated that it had seen testimonies and photos published by former detainees, saying they were subjected to humiliation and did not receive suitable food or water. The detainees are forced to pay sums of money amounting to more than $1,000 in exchange for their release, through a deal between brokers and the detention centers, according to EuroMedHR. The monitor also quoted local sources from Daraa, who reported that the detainee Azzouz Barakat al-Safadi, 40, died in prison due to health complications on August 7, after the prison administration denied him medical treatment. Meanwhile, Libyan Crimes Watch (LCW) said it received dozens of calls from witnesses and families of Syrian migrants held in the Gout al-Shaal detention center. There are over 200 detainees who are treated "inhumanely and subjected to torture," reported the LCW. The group called on the Justice Minister Halima Abdul Rahman to reveal the illegal prisons, which she previously said were closed recently. It also urged the minister to reveal the legal measures taken against prison administrators.
