The Italian rider Damiano Caruso won stage nine of the Vuelta a España on Sunday after a tremendous solo display in the mountains of Andalucía, while the reigning champion, Primoz Roglic, came second to increase his overall lead. Caruso spent the final 70km of the 188km stage from Puerto Lumbreras to Alto de Velefique out in front alone and, although Roglic and Enric Mas were eating into his lead by the end, the 33-year-old clung on to win his fourth Grand Tour stage and his first at the Vuelta since 2017. Riding for Team Bahrain, Caruso crossed the line in 5hr 3min 14sec, 1min 5sec ahead of Roglic, who edged Mas to the line by 1sec to increase his advantage over the Spaniard to 28sec in the general classification. Movistar’s Mas launched a brave attack in the final 4km and only Jumbo–Visma’s Roglic could stay with him, widening the gap between them and the other Vuelta hopefuls. Miguel Ángel López (Movistar) is 1min 21sec behind Roglic in third and Jack Haig (Team Bahrain) 1min 42sec back in fourth, while the Giro champion, Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers), is 1min 52sec back in fifth. Britain’s Adam Yates (Ineos Grenadiers) is sixth, 2min 7sec back. Meanwhile in the Netherlands, Beth Shriever added the world title to her Olympic crown with victory at the women’s BMX Supercross World Championships. The 22-year-old gold medallist backed up her Tokyo triumph after a three-rider crash put the American Alise Willoughby out of the running. The result meant the former teaching assistant Shriever had become the first woman to hold both Olympic and world BMX Supercross titles at the same time. The Briton held off the challenge of Judy Baauw and Laura Smulders, who came in second and third. Shriever’s victory in resisting the Dutch pair was all the sweeter given the contest was held in Arnhem. Shriever could hardly believe what had happened after securing her second major win in three weeks. Speaking in a video interview posted by UCI BMX Supercross, she said: “I just went on the outside, just going to see what happens, had an all right start and just dug in. “I gave it everything I’d got and I’ve come away with another gold medal, so could not be happier.” Shortly after her victory, she posted on Instagram: “Am I in a dream? World champion, what a way to finish the season! Doubled up thanks to everyone who believed in me.”
