DUBAI: “Azzedine Alaïa, 18 rue de la Verrerie Paris,” is a 27-minute documentary directed by Nathalie Plicot that offers a rare glimpse into the Parisian home of the late Tunisian couturier Azzedine Alaia. For the latest updates, follow us on Instagram @arabnews.lifestyle Part of a series “Une Maison, Une Artiste,” the short film, which is being broadcast on French television channel France 5 until Oct. 31, traces the life of the renowned designer while discovering his home, where he lived, created, worked and hosted now-legendary dinners that brought creatives together. In 1987, Alaia purchased a group of buildings in the Marais neighborhood in Paris. The group of industrial buildings were all connected to one another, and located between the rue de la Verrerie and the rue de Moussy. Situated on 18 Rue de la Verrerie, the designer’s studio was housed in a late 19th-century building — a former BHV department store warehouse. His atelier lived above his store on the ground floor and below his private residence. The documentary offers a look at his atelier, left untouched since his passing in 2017, the apartments he had set up for guests, his cellar that where he kept his collections and his iconic kitchen where the likes of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Farida Khelfa or Naomi Campbell sat down for meals cooked by the designer. The film also features quotes from Alaia read aloud by French actress Isabelle Huppert as well as photographs and interviews of those closest to him such as the painter Christoph Von Weyhe, studio director Caroline Fabre Bazin, fitting model Ana Carolina Reis and his personal chef Ibrahim Soumare.
