A Palestinian official announced that the Palestinian leadership would abandon any commitment to international legitimacy resolutions, including a two-state solution, if those were not implemented Azzam al-Ahmad, a member of the Executive Committee of the Palestinian Liberation Organization and the Central Committee of Fatah, said that it was time to implement the decisions of international legitimacy. “If there is no response, we will not hesitate to abandon all these decisions, including the two-state solution,” Al-Ahmad told the Palestinian official radio on Tuesday. He added: “We will inform the US administration that we are tired of waiting, an international conference must be held under the auspices of the United Nations and the International Quartet, to implement the resolutions of international legitimacy. We want deeds, not words.” His comments came after a meeting of the Executive Committee and hours before a meeting of the Fatah Central Committee, which was chaired by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. The latter expressed disappointment at the slackened US effort towards a peace process. “The current situation cannot continue with Israel’s insistence on maintaining its settlement and punitive policies against the Palestinian people,” Abbas said during a meeting with Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde. A statement by the Swedish foreign ministry quoted Linde as stressing her country’s support for achieving peace and stability based on the two-state solution. In a press conference with Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad Al-Maliki, Linde emphasized the stance of Sweden and the European Union with regards to negotiations that are based on a two-state solution and on international law, which include ending the occupation, ensuring security for the Palestinian and Israeli sides, and resolving issues mainly of Jerusalem as the capital of the two states. Abbas, for his part, called for the necessity of achieving a comprehensive calm and halting hostilities against the Palestinian people in Jerusalem, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, implementing signed agreements and confidence-building measures, and working on a political process under the auspices of the International Quartet.
