DUBAI: Fertiglobe, a partnership between OCI and the Abu Dhabi National Oil Co., has selected US-based Plug Power to supply a 100-megawatt electrolyzer for its green hydrogen project in Egypt. The electrolyzer will be at a facility in the Egyptian town of Ain Sokhna where it will produce green hydrogen as feedstock for up to 90,000 tons of green ammonia production. “Egypt is an ideal location to produce green hydrogen given its unique renewables profile with strong solar and wind loads, and close to markets with a hydrogen deficit,” Fertiglobe said in a release. The production of green ammonia is essential to scaling hydrogen use, particularly as a carrier fuel for storage and transportation. “Plug Power is a leader in electrolysis technology, and this strategic partnership further solidifies our execution strategy. At start-up, this will be the largest green hydrogen and largest green ammonia application globally,” Nassef Sawiris, executive chairman of OCI NV, said. Construction of the facility will be accelerated in anticipation of the COP27 Summit in Egypt in November 2022, he added.
