Arab League’s Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit stressed the importance of the cohesion of the internal Palestinian front, and the need to preserve the foundations of the Palestinian cause and the two-state solution despite the difficult international and regional situations at this stage. This came while meeting the Secretary of the Central Committee of the Fatah Movement Jibril Rajoub Monday at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo. The Arab League said in a statement that the Secretary General discussed with Rajoub the latest developments of the Palestinian cause, including means to maintain the Palestinian national project in light of the great challenges at the current stage. Rajoub also briefed Aboul Gheit about declining chances of relaunching the peace talks due to the stances of the Israeli hard-line ruling right-wing coalition. Meanwhile, Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh called on the international community on Monday to interfere and put an end to Israel’s plans to go ahead with thousands of new settler homes in East Jerusalem. He said such a measure would lead to the demolition of Palestinian homes and a potential partition of the West Bank Condemning Israeli forces for “forcibly displacing” thousands of Palestinian families. The Palestinian prime minister told a government meeting that the expansion of new Israeli settler homes in East Jerusalem could further split the West Bank into northern and southern zones. He urged the US and the European Union to intervene and put an end to this “heinous crime” that could alter the geographic landscape of the West Bank, blaming the Israeli government for “deliberately undermining” any prospect for peace in the Middle East. The international community should not turn a blind eye to “Israeli atrocities,” he underlined, accusing Israeli forces of “ethnic cleansing” against the Palestinians. — KUNA
