The giant computer chip and semiconductor manufacturer relies on gases from Ukraine RIYADH: US chipmaker Micron Technology Inc. said that intensifying Ukraine-Russia tensions leave the semiconductor supply chain prone to risks, Bloomberg reported. The giant computer chip and semiconductor manufacturer relies on gases from Ukraine for its production operations. “We have a small part of our noble gases coming from Ukraine and, of course, we carry large inventory but more importantly have multiple sources of supply,” Chief Executive, Sanjay Mehrotra, told Bloomberg. With speculation that Russia is invading the country, the company must be cautious and prepare for possible shortages of electronic components. Mehrotra said his company’s supply chain of noble gases is in a “reasonable shape", based on analysis, adding that it will continue to oversee the situation closely. “We are coming into the year certainly expecting the supply chain shortages to improve for the non-memory components we procure from other suppliers,” the executive said. The current rate of improvement is “behind what we were hoping for,” he added. On a wider scale, the semiconductor sector worldwide has been held back by rising demand, global supply chain disruptions, and geopolitical tensions.
