Saudi Arabia’s General Authority for Military Industries (GAMI) announced the localization of a new multi-use monitoring system called Zarqa Al-Yamama-Zali, manufactured by the National Company for Mechanical Systems (NCMS). The announcement was made on the sidelines of the first World Defense Show, being held in Riyadh. The Zarqa Al-Yamama-Zali represents an important step in the localization of electro-optic sensor systems in the Kingdom. It is tipped as a qualitative leap in the level and accuracy of these systems, and its contribution to fulfill the market need of electro-optic systems. It provides high performance in monitoring operations, and has the flexibility to operate through different control systems, while adapting to multiple use modes to suit each task. GAMI had worked in partnership with the Ministry of Interior and NCMS to conclude a contract for the manufacture and supply of the Zarqa Al-Yamama-Zali electro-optic sensor system, and to discuss ways to develop it locally according to the highest international specifications and standards. It also carries out training and maintenance operations locally throughout the contract period and at the hands of trained Saudi cadres with advanced technical expertise in this field. The Zarqa Al-Yamama-Zali system comes as a realistic translation of the strategic directions in the localization of military industries in the Kingdom. GAMI is working to determine trends and manage the linkage between the beneficiaries and local manufacturers in the military industries system in the Kingdom, as the manufacture of such systems locally is considered as an important step in terms of purchasing management and increasing spending efficiency, while maintaining world-class technical specifications. It is noteworthy that GAMI, together with its partners, aims to localize more than 50 percent of the Kingdom’s spending on military equipment and services by 2030. The field of electro-optics and infrared is among the strategic areas targeted for localization, and this is through supporting investment in local content; expanding opportunities for qualified national cadres, providing incentives to local manufacturers, in addition to expanding the scope and impact of current capabilities and technologies.
