RIYADH: France is in talks with Spain regarding the construction of a gas pipeline connecting the two countries, Bloomberg reported. This comes as both countries, just like the rest of Europe, are trying to reduce dependency on Russian gas, after its invasion of Ukraine. Previously, France has resisted the building of the pipeline, also referred to as the Midcat pipeline. Now that the underlying situation has changed, France has changed its mind. In an upcoming visit to Paris, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez will meet with President Emmanuel Macron to discuss the matter. The building of the pipeline will help Europe drift away from Russian gas, by providing access to Algerian gas, and boosting liquified natural gas imports via Spain. In the long term, the pipeline may facilitate other types of fuels, such as hydrogen, to flow through it.
